Humanist Ceremony FAQs
Yes. All Humanist marriages and elopements conducted in Northern Ireland are fully legally recognised. As a registered Humanist celebrant, I am also your legal officiant — which means I guide you through the legal paperwork and officiate your marriage on the day. Your ceremony will be both deeply meaningful and legally binding. No separate registry office visit needed.
A Humanist ceremony puts you at the centre. There's no fixed script, no set structure, and no expectation to follow traditions that don't feel right for you. You have the freedom to create a ceremony that genuinely reflects who you are and how you love.
Your wedding can take place almost anywhere — a field, a forest, a museum, a distillery, or a boutique hotel. It can be an intimate elopement or a big joyful celebration surrounded by everyone you love. You decide the style, tone, and format. My role is to guide you through the process and help you shape something that feels authentic, inclusive, and truly yours.
As early as possible, especially for popular Saturday dates between May and September. Many couples book 12–18 months in advance. I'm currently taking bookings for 2026 and 2027 — get in touch to check your date.
Once you get in touch and we confirm your date, here's roughly how it works:
Initial consultation — a relaxed video chat (usually on Zoom, WhatsApp, Teams or by phone) where we get to know each other, talk through your ideas, and I answer any questions you have
Booking confirmation — a deposit secures your date, and you'll receive a confirmation email once payment is received
Legal paperwork — this can begin once you're within a year of your wedding date. I'll send you signed copies of the General Register Office Marriage Notice Form (GRO446) by post for you to complete and take to the council office in the area where your ceremony will take place. This is processed by the local council for a fee of £44 per couple. More information can be found here: https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/how-and-when-give-notice-marriage
Questionnaire — I'll send you each a detailed questionnaire to help me understand your story, your relationship, and what matters most to you
Ceremony writing — I craft your bespoke ceremony script, weaving in your story, any readings or rituals you'd like, and all the legal elements. I keep the main ceremony as a beautiful surprise for your wedding day — but if you'd like to see specific elements in advance, such as your vows or ring wording, I'm happy to share those on request.
Your wedding day — I arrive early, hold everything calmly and confidently, and make sure your ceremony is everything you hoped it would be
Absolutely — and I love this part. Popular rituals include handfasting, unity candles, ring warming, sand blending, and wine ceremonies, among others. You're also very welcome to write your own vows, have friends or family do readings, or include anything else that feels meaningful to you. I'll guide you through the options and help you decide what feels right.
Almost anywhere you like. I've officiated ceremonies in country estates, city hotels, beaches, forests, private gardens, distilleries, and even a field at the coast. If you're dreaming of a particular location, get in touch and we can talk through the logistics.
Yes — I regularly travel across Northern Ireland and am happy to discuss ceremonies further afield. If you are from further afield and would like to marry in Northern Ireland, that's absolutely possible — just get in touch and I can talk you through how it works.
Yes. Couples from the UK and Republic of Ireland can marry in Northern Ireland through a straightforward legal process. Couples travelling from further afield (for example, the USA) may need to meet additional requirements before the ceremony. The General Register Office can advise on the specific documentation needed, and I'll help guide you through it. In addition to my fee, there is an additional cost paid directly to the GRO:
General Register Office legal paperwork fee: currently £44 per couple
Simply get in touch via the contact form or drop me a WhatsApp/message. Once we've had a brief chat and you're happy to go ahead, a deposit secures your date. I'll take care of everything else from there.
